Expectations Vs. Reality

As we all know, “Amity is the leading education group of India with over 1,00,000 students studying across 1000 acres of hi-tech campus.” My decision of coming to Amity was very vague. I did not know anything about the university, I had never heard of it either. A friend of mine suggested Amity, when I asked him about reputed private colleges in India. The website was very catchy and praised Amity University like its one the best. I made one of the most critical and important decision of my life in a rush. My parents have always been very supportive of me and on discussing with them, they agreed to send me to India for my studies. After coming to India, I thought “how bad could it be?” The answer to that is bad!

I was expecting a really good infrastructure, which was upto my expectations. The classes, the hostel rooms, food court, etc all of that was as expected. Then came the reality, when I had to go to my class. I was kicked out of my first class on the first day. I cried like a little baby because I felt very out of the place and home sick. As weeks passed by, I realized I do not belong here and I decided to leave. But that couldn’t happen as my mother clearly objected quitting from anything I take up. Weeks passed by and things started getting better, as I made some awesome friends. I was given so much love and care from everyone around, besides the teachers. The first and the second semester were very bad, as the teachers thought I was a cheater, a student who didn’t want to study or attend classes. But the truth was that they were very partial. So what if I didn’t sit in the front and nod to everything they had to say. I am not a student who will pretend to be nice to a teacher just because they grade us. I did not understand the language, the subject, their way of teaching, and specially the reason of copying something from an already typed lab file to a self-made/noted lab file. This way I lost interest in the classes, and barely attended them. The result of my ignorance towards classes and the language and communication barriers between the teachers and me, was that I flunked two of my subjects and barely passed the rest of them.

After this failure I realized I need to get my agenda straight and do what I am here for, ie study. Starting second semester and till present date I have had almost full attendance and no backlogs. My CGPA has really improved and I am doing well with my academics. With time I started sinking in the reality and it has made me stronger.

Besides the academics, I also participated in the annual sports meet, famously known as “sangathan” which was all in all a very good experience.

I have been through really good times and a few really bad times in Amity. Hostel life here in amity can be tough with all the restrictions and trust issues they have here. But it had made me really strong and adaptable to situation I am not used to. I have learnt how to eat bad tasting food, lie, and most importantly do my own chores.

I had thought of Amity as a really “cool” and “chilled-out” place and it turned to be just the opposite. There are restrictions on going out of the college during the day hours if you are a hosteller, restrictions on the type of clothes to wear, how to hang out with the opposite sex and a few others.

I would like to wrap up this experience by saying that there was good and bad both. I learnt many things here that I possibly couldn’t have anywhere else. Even though this place is more commercial than “non-profit” I have accepted it as my own and will make it proud. I will try to make the best out of the education I have got here and make something of myself.

Internship Experience !!!

I am very thankful to NATIONAL BUILDING CONSTRUCTION CORPORATION LIMITED (NBCC Ltd.) for having given me the opportunity to undertake my summer training at their prestigious  construction of Solar Energy Centre at the outskirt of the city Gurgaon.It was very good learning experience for me to have worked at this site as this project involves the building is need to made such like that so that after full construction, solar panels could be installed on them and the power backup should be stored in the underground Energy Plant.I would like to convey my heartiest thanks to Mr. Sanjay Pandey,who helped us lot in every work going out there. I studied about concreting of flooring methods such as batching, mixing, transporting and compacting process.In the period of training,I closely aspects of practical knowledge.There are difference between theoretical and practical approach to execute various construction process.

•   The most important thing i have learned over there is the quality of construction work was at priority with respect to time.Various check were formatted at each step of construction to ensure the quality of work 

•   Second most important thing is "How to save money in construction?" as a civil engineer.

They planned whole 45 days schedule for me that through what all things i have to go through in this time period.In these 45 days i felt really as if i have entered professional world.

Now coming to the non technical part of internship as myself , Anilesh,Rohit,Abhinav are my

batchmates at NBCC. We wander around site seeing various

departmens,interacting with peoples there, 

we interacted with many labours also for gaining some knowledge with them,in free time we have

awesome cup of tea and paukaris at nukkad every day, we goes around the area near site for fun.

At last i would only say that it was really a great experience,although i went sick and went back to home after somedays but overall it was great fun and experience out there with my colleagues Anilesh,Abhinav and Rohit.Thanks to all of them for supporting me in my project.

Internship experience @ NBCC ltd.

As Summer internship is an important part of our curriculum, so i chose to do internship from a reputed government firm, NBCC ltd. It was a great experience.
NBCC ltd. primarily provides construction services in three segments: (i) Project Management Consultancy (ii) Real Estate Development & (iii) EPC Contract.

 During my internship, i worked and understood the on site construction of solar energy plant of gwalpahari, gurgaon. It was knowledgeable experience working   with civil engineers of MKC INFRASTRUCTURES, as it was handed the project of construction by NBCC.

On the first day of the training  I was introduced to the office staff and to the site engineers of MKC INFRASTRUCTURES. I was excited. I was soon made aware of the tasks I had to do in the first week of internship. First day went very smoothly and I was quite happy returning home. In my first week, I only visited the gwalpahari, gurgaon site but gained a lot of knowledge as every floor of the building had some different type of work going on.
The following weeks, i studied about concreting of flooring methods such as batching, mixing, transporting and compacting processes. After that i studied about different curing processes used to provide strength to the structure.
The construction was going swiftly and different areas were running simultaneously, hostel areas and Zone 1 and Zone .

  I came to know about different building materials which are used in civil engineering to make the structure economical, accurate and efficient.

I traveled daily two hours to reach my internship site and same to return by metro. And spent 4-5 hours at site. I used to have lunch with my colleagues in the restaurant nearby the site. It was a very tiring schedule but i gave my best.

It was a very precious and worthy experience with NBCC and i will cherish it throughout my life. I am thankful to all my friends, faculties and on-site engineers who helped me in puruing my internship and making it a memorable one. THANK YOU ALL

Lifetime Experience at NBCC Ltd.

The last 6 weeks of my internship provided me so much knowledge and experience in field. My Internship was at National Building Construction Corporation Ltd.

There we were provided our Industry guide Mr. Sanjay Pandey.

Sir, helped us a lot in clearing our doubts and even enhances our knowledge a lot. The main agenda was the construction of Solar Energy Centre at the outskirt of the city Gurgaon.

The building is need to made such like that so that after full construction, solar panels could be installed on them and the power backup should be stored in the underground Energy Plant.

Mr. Pandey treat us like their student and guide us everywhere, the only regret I have that there is a lot of difference between what we studied in books and daily life experience and that’s why it is said that as a civil engineer, it’s the experience which is counted. We even got to learn a lot from the skilled labour present there. Though they were not aware of the technical words like Mr. Sanjay knows but they tell us a lot with their years of experience. Some of the random test they did in situation as well as some of the approximation they took.

The construction was on full pace and different areas were running simultaneously, hostel areas and Zone 1 and Zone 2 , We need to report at 10 in the morning but sometimes due to unfavourable reasons we couldn’t make it on time but still Sanjay sir never complain too much. His calm and friendly nature helped us a lot in many of ways; we were free to ask random questions. He even shows us how to calculate area and read plans and how to implement them. He even took us to testing labs where he helped us in performing some tests; some were for strength, quality check, etc.

We even came to know about different software’s which are used in civil engineering to make the task easy, accurate and efficient.

We just need to input some necessary data and everything is in front of us with just one click, Bending Moment, Shear force, at what distance column should be provided and etc. 

We even learn how to done costing, draft letter and other daily documents.

Overall my experience as an intern was very good but as a civil engineer it required lot of physical labour as well as mental stress. We need to stand under sun for hours no matter what but at the end, if u r satisfied with what u did, then it’s worth it.

Management is a big task as a civil engineer, tackling every person and dealing with every type of person whether he is illiterate labour, a contractor or some government officer, is sometimes a tough job. But again I would say, nothing is easy it’s the person who sail through everything and make it to his destiny.

Summer Internship Experience

In Today’s World, Multistory Residential Apartments and Row Housing are becoming more and more popular. Every person aims to own one of these – either to reside or to invest.  Good Designing and construction of these structures are necessary for the nation to look tidy and be a better place to live in. Therefore, to gain hands on experience in this field, the practical training was conducted on the topic “Multistory Residential Apartments and Row Housing. Everything was practically witnessed and understood in accordance with the classroom learnings.  By this training I learned a lot about the practical aspects of construction process.

It is a vast topic and requires thorough knowledge of Civil Engineering.  The project was carried out in the field of Real Estate and efforts were made to cover as much of different types of construction as possible.

In 7 weeks of training under Lahoty Associates, I was sent to several sites but  two sites - Lakshya Towers and Landmark City, were observed closely to understand everything from excavation till superstructure.

Lakshya Towers, is a Multistory Residential Apartment project. It is located at Road no.1. It has

9 floors. Basement is for parking, on ground floor is the manager’s office and parking for two

Wheelers. From first floor to seventh floor it has one 2BHK apartment   and    three   3BHK

appartments on each floor. On eighth floor there is one 2BHK apartment and a duplex. This

building also has a swimming pool and a gym.

Landmark City, is a complete township. It is situated at  the Kota-Bundi Road. It has 2 sizes of

Apartments i.e. 40’X60’ and 30’X60’ in the form of row housing. The first type is a framed

structure and the later one is the load bearing structure. It also has multistory apartments, a mall

and a school. A recreational area is also provided.

On the first day of the training  I was introduced to the office staff and to the site engineers of Lakshya Towers. I was a bit nervous at first but they all really did well in comforting me. I was soon made aware of the tasks I had to do in the first week of internship. First day went very smoothly and I was quite happy returning home. In my first week, I only visited the Lakshya towers but gained a lot of knowledge as every floor of the building had some different type of work going on. During this week I learnt about services - plumbing work, sanitary work, water supplies and electrical fittings.

During the second and the third week, I visited Landmark City and witnessed the foundation work, construction of pavement, ramp, water tower, plaster work, and learnt to read different maps required for construction.

I again visited Lakshya Towers in the fourth week of internship in order to understand the casting of slab, concreting, and also saw the construction of raft foundation.

Next week I was sent to various other sites like university being constructed by career point etc in order to gain some knowledge in the finish work like placing of tiles, toilet fitting, door fittings etc.

Sixth and seventh week were for acquiring knowledge on the software. So in the Lahoty associates office I was taught AutoCAD. AutoCAD is a software application for computer-aided design (CAD) and drafting. The software supports both 2D and 3D formats. The software is developed and sold by Autodesk, Inc. first released in December 1982 by Autodesk in the year following the purchase of the first form of the software by Autodesk founder, John Walker.

The aim of the research project was to study the various processes and techniques involved in construction of a Multi-Story Residential Apartments and Row Housing. This aim was truly achieved as I gained a lot of on field knowledge and concepts got clearer after witnessing practically what had been studied theoretically.

This training helped me understand the correct methods, which are adopted for construction of any structure. I learned to implement things practically and it also helped me  understand the atmosphere of the construction site. The different stages of construction were studied in great detail with all its practical applications. The project helped immensely in understanding the construction process and also helped in learning how to interact with labors and other officials.It has been a great learning curve and it has proved to be very useful in connecting the theoretical knowledge to the practical aspects of the subject.The practical training gave me the required on field exposure and it bridged the gap between the class room learning and actual work on field. It was very beneficial to see and learn the construction work as this increased my thinking ability in this field and the way of seeing at things.

Internship with RITES

RITES Ltd.(Rail India Technical and Economic Services-A Govt. of India Enterprise).Working  with
RITES was a great learning  experience..Duration of the Summer Internship was around 6 weeks.The
project involved construction of Hostel Accommodation for Boys/Girls in the University.The Project
cost was roughly estimated out to be around 10 crores. People working there were very professional
and at the same time they were very helpful also. They  had prepared schedule  for us which we had to
follow from  the very first day of our internship Project is located within the campus of Jamia Millia
Islamia,New Delhi.The project involved construction of Hostel Accommodation for Boys/Girls in the
University.
    .RITES was holding the responsibility of PMC(Project Management Consultants) and the
Construction was being carried out by 2 Contractors. My Faculty Guide on behalf of Amity is
Mr.virendra malik and my Industry guide on behalf of RITES was Mr. Mansoor. They taught us
everything that is possible for us learn as a student and indeed more than that in that short time
period. Being there in this company was Wonderful experience for me as i came to know how really a
professional life is.
     During the 1st week of the visit we were also introduced to various employees of RITES. Also we
were taken to the Construction Site to observe the Area. When we reached the site we noticed that
Site Layout/Levelling was being carried out. Levelling was being carried out with the help of a device
called Dumpy Level.
   our next week was followed with some mismanagement.PCC is a thin layer of Concrete that is
applied on the base of the Foundation on which the Raft Foundation is to be laid out. The PCC
was made in ratio of 1:4:8.Its important to mention that a lot of difficulties were faced during this
stage as the concrete quality should have been upto the standards After PCC was applied the next
stage was Curing of PCC. Curing is the process of maintaining adequate moisture content so that
concrete hardens after curing..The Columns were of size 650mm*350mm. The raft foundation was
laid out over the PCC(after the layout) with a clear cover. The Raft Foundation/Mat was of  16mm
diameter.This process was quite frustrating and tough as it involved perfect timing,experience as well
as harsh working hours as Concreting couldnt be done in day during which temperatures would reach
45 degrees. Along with the Construction techniques we were also shared with information on Project
Management as well as with Bill of Quantities,
      Now coming to the non technical part of internship as myself , nilay and ashutosh are my
batchmates at rites. a place like jamia university ,we wander around university seeing various
departmens, labs,interacting with  students there without any fear as there was no restrictions so called
i-card  and all... we interacted with many students there have lunch with them, snacks and yah an
awesome cup of coffee at college cafeteria every day, we goes around the area near university and as
it is a densely populated area we tasted many cuisines in various hotels..
        It was a great learning experience this summer, and due to the interesting nature of the work , I
think that 6 weeks experience can’t be expressed in just one single post. overall my Internship was
quite a big success.It gave me confidence in the field of Civil Engineering and I hope to gain more
Knowledge in various other Civil Engineering Projects. Finally this all helped me to experience  and
learn about the professional culture.
