My Summer Internship Experience

I did my summer internship at INTERCONTINENTAL CONSULTANTS AND TECHNOCRATS PVT LTD. This is basically a consultancy for major construction bodies like National Highway Authority of India NHAI. This company mainly deals with designing of Highways,Aviation, Structures etc.

The people in this organization were really helpful. They taught Everything with interest and took time for me from their busy schedule. They taught us everything that is possible for us learn as a student and indeed more than that in that short time period. Being there in this company was Wonderful experience for me as i came to know how really a professional life is. The work pressure that those people were handling and they have to complete within given time period and apart from pressure of higher officials the engineers working over there they themselves are solely responsible and show due sincerity towards their work as they are designing something on which thousands and even lakhs of people may travel in case of any misconduct or carelessness may lead to huge loss to both life and money invested in the project they are involved . And keeping aside the learning's and all the impressive thing i have experienced there is the discipline being followed in the company. They maintained my attendance sheet and i am glad to say that i was upto mark of appreciation as i kept my record 100%. Not only attendance but also the time i have to stay there engaged i.e. 9am to 6 pm. They planned whole 45 days schedule for me that through what all things i have to go through in this time period.in these 45 days i felt really as if i have entered professional world.

Now coming to the point what i learnt over there. First of all as a civil engineer one must know  the procedure how work starts from planning stage to beginning of actual construction work and then end. The proposal for road development is put up in the 20 year plan that how much and where road network has to be developed. And after that implementation is done for which bidding is done in which consultants are selected for preparing the reports and further designing. after the bidding is over then a feasibility report is prepared and submitted. A team of Surveyors will first go and  and give necessary details required to prepare that report. and after that an inception report is prepared in which places, number of bridges, obstructions coming in the way and various other things are mentioned and details of the team and department that will be working on it is mentioned.And after that a draft project report is prepared involving all designing steps, drawings, presentations are prepared and then a final detailed project report is prepared which will be the final report including all improvements to be done in the previous reports.After preparing DPR again bidding is done to assign work to contractor.and so construction begins.

The first department  that has to work is the surveying department. After getting information from surveying department role traffic study and transportation comes into play which will decide what will be the traffic density on that particular road ,how many lanes has to be be provided initially and how the future growth would be and various other things, after the traffic study and all geotechnical department starts their study they conduct various tests of the soil and surrounding environment and give actual prevailing conditions over the site.depending upon these reports highway department begin their work. These highway people design the road i.e. vertical alignment,Horizontal Alignment,cross sectional elements, interchanges, junctions etc.simultaneously Bridges department also begins their work they design bridges that have to be constructed in between. upto 6m bridge is known as culvert and above 6m and upto 60m is minor bridge and above 60m is considered as mqjor bridges.after completing the whole designing part cost estimation is done in which over all cost for that project is found out. after completing everything the whole project these reports are sent for proof check to some other trusted company.many times ICT is given projects for proof check.they check each and everything and  finally give green signal to begin work.then contract is assigned to some contractor capable for it and construction goes on. This is how work starts and ends.
