Internship at dmrc, unforgettable experience with white helmet.

I spent this summer interning at DMRC (Delhi metro railway corporation ltd) Delhi , which was one of the course of my 4th year .the project is undreground extension of the existing metro station at azadpur , which is the inbetween station of the new line which will run from mukundpur to yamuna vihar.There are so many companies to do internship at but interning at DMRC gives really special feel , also there are many fields of jobs and internship , but being the civil engineer the internship in the field of construction is something totally different from all other fields. it was really great experience being on site in white helmet.

The main objective of this internship was to get the practical knowledge , as by sitting in the class and learning the procedures are not at all enough to actually become an engineer. It seems to be very illogical at times when you say i am learning construction techniques sitting  in the class, atleast i feels so. being on the site i actually saw how all the work is carried out ,how so many permissions are to be taken before every task , how all the reports are made and maintained , how the work is divided and in what sequence it is done.

  
Talking about my experience , on the very first day when we , me and my friend ,went to the office we were asked to wait for the project manager for long and unknown time;we somehow managed to do so by interacting with other interns  and took little help of mc donalds.Later we were been called and were assigned site and were guided for the internship and learning , which seemed to be little exaggerated later. Although it was a good feel when we were being called as engineers.

Now next day being very excited for the site , we went there and we got our dress. The dress was nothing but the personal protection equipment(PPE), which was compulsory to be worn on site. That included helmet, safety shoes and luminous jacket, wearing it was again a good feeling.We were now hyped for the work we were supposed to do and learn.We were then told how critical this area of work is, how so many factors are dependant on one structure and how one structure is dependant on so many other .In this work area there is no scope for any mistake and ignorance , since once the construction is done , it is to stand for atleast the designed period and even longer.

on site i saw how safety is the very first thing to be taken care of , also how the work is carried out in a way so that it has least adverse impact on the environment, like planting 10 times the trees that were cut,least sound pollution etc. I learnt how evcavation is done for the 3 level underground metro station and the shafts were made for the launching of TBM(tunnel boring machine).We went to first level excavated area by gantry crane and saw the work for the second level. Many were the days wen we were given a big fat file to read the instruction and bond sighned between the client and contractor, that time is really boring but thanks to my friend who actually helped in omitting that time by chatting.We also saw many machineries by which work is made easy and is carried out on site.In between we used to have good tea time with the engineers when they shared their experiences.

After reading the contract files and the signed bond , we got to know how demanding he client is and under how much pressure the contractor is. The contractor has to start every task only with the permission of client engineer and other authorities, and is bound to do all the work according to the bond without any ignorance. One was the experience when concreting was going on the site , that day i saw every person was in so much of tension and all the labour was so much in to work. People were freaking out at every other step and many of them started abusing each other when the work was not going in planned way. I also learnt how the ground improvement is done by so many different methods like jet grounting , stone column etc and how important it is to improve the quality of soil.We also visited the batching plant where we saw machineries, the mixing and storage area .There is lot more to learn at site but since the work takes time and internship was for just 6 weeks we could only witness these activities.

At last i would only like to say that it was really a great experience , although i wanted to experience the boring of tunnel by TBM but it  is to be launched in august , i am waiting for their call to visit the site as they said .
