From 4CS1-ASET: Has Science Failed...

Has Science Failed in Developing Scientific Temperament in Society? (Inputs from the Class GD)

Scientific temperament can be defined as the way we look at the world in a scientific manner to brainstorm whether a certain product or issue works, looking at it with a logical and scientific point of view. It is an attitude of logical thinking.

Science has always been a part of our lives. It has made extraordinary things possible. At the flick of a switch, we have light and electricity. When we are ill, science helps us get better. Its place in society is not to unfold quietly at the sidelines but to become a fundamental part of the game. Now more than ever, science must engage with us, and we must engage with science.

But there are times when science has failed to develop scientific temperament in the society because of many reasons. Essential requirement of Scientific Temper in the society is the attitude of not accepting answers without scrutiny. We will find that the tendency is very common to accept views and opinions simply, because traditionally we have accepted these views, or some very important persons or some books which are highly esteemed like our religious books have expressed the views. But, the scientific method requires solid information and incontrovertible data, and then suitable analysis before accepting anything.

We all know that we knew much less a hundred years ago or a thousand years ago, hence, all views handed down to us by tradition are not to be unquestioningly accepted. People of our society would find many of traditional ideas to be sound because they were based on a lot of observation and are being passed from generations, but this does not make all traditional ideas to be reasonable and sound. So, we have to be critical and selective in examining and accepting readily available ideas and theories.

It is a common knowledge that a lot of prejudice and beliefs about different people or issues is passed on from generation to generation, family to family through its uncritical acceptance. Many beliefs and superstitions fall in this category. The scientific attitude requires objectively, not rushing into readymade opinions but patient observation and then by only forming an opinion. If we are inquisitive and ask questions, then we should examine the data or evidence, and we cannot afford to be single-minded in such a case. We have to be open to change our opinion if the evidence takes us in that direction.

In fact for an overall growth and development of any organization or the country as a whole, we have to foster a Scientific Temper in the citizens with absolute capacity for critical evaluation. There are two possibilities for achieving this target. First may be to make special efforts for developing scientific temper by organizing different types of programmes at grass root level. The second one may be to make it an integral part of the school curriculum. The principal component of education should be the development of scientific temper. The objective of school education must be to develop an active and informed learner not a passive and unaware one. Efforts should be made to encourage maximum use of innovative teaching methods in science learning which in turn help in developing scientific temper among the students.

This scientific temperament is important in our life because this kind of attitude enable general public for making their decisions rational. Therefore we can conclude that the development of scientific temper among the citizens of our society is essential for the overall development of the nation.

A Castle Of Memories

My first day at amity had me anxious about anything but ragging. But surprisingly not even a single senior even asked for an introduction. First month was occupied in understanding the structure and norms of the college. The terminology of “X-Y batches, tutorial classes and auxiliary notebooks (which funnily, I bought a new one every week before the practical class)” was new and gave us the idea that contrary to the public belief classes did occur at Amity. Our section was then divided, and I found myself as a part of new smaller section .  I liked the small size because it gave us a better chance to interact with the faculties. Then the groups started budding up. We made friends, we fought and the circle continued. Amidst our hectic schedule Behavioral Science and Communication Skills classes provided us some refreshment. My first semester ended I some pretty decent result.

I don’t know why some people criticize the university because it’s a pretty organized and a well infra-structured one. Of course we can’t compare it with the IIT’s and all, but we all never got through JEE and we knew what we were signing up for before taking admissions. Besides the innumerable classes the college gave me some of the finest friends namely Abdullah ,Abhinav ,Piyush ,Anilesh ,Ashutosh, Abhishek , Varun  and last but the most unique Rohit. These fellow sailormen helped  me cruise the ship of my engineering through some pretty rough water, which on most occasions were consequences of our own actions. Our group was always the wild one. We presented some real challenge to our faculties . Classroom was our arena in which we never failed to light everyone’s face with frequent smiles and laughs. I was very punctual at being late for the first class, which lead to many scenes of requests and confrontations with the faculties.

People always term their life at B.Tech as miserable,  I’d like to differ as mine was awesome. We explored places at our college, around college ,Delhi etc. First day ,first show movies every Friday ,frequent parties, cricket at E1 ground, bowling sessions, missing minors for a game of cards were included in our college timetable. Our favorite spot at H Block , the wicked sense of humor of us people,  and many more made our life as easy as it gets. I would not say that ,”life at Amity is 3 A’s, Attendance,  Assignments and Amizone” as mentioned by a friend of mine, because attendance was never a problem ,we never made the assignments and Amizone was a dear friend of us. No story is complete without a tinge of love, and I had my share of it too. Along with fests ,sangathan, and other events ,one thing that can’t be forgotten is the Military Camp. Be it the chanting of “Bijli” while marching, late night chat  sessions , daily dose of putting a blanket over someone’s head and beating him, ‘exclusive’ use of fire extinguishers and countless more, that was an amazing experience. I think Amity should provide atleast 2 of such trips for every batch.

The two internships provided me with some decent experience at work as well as personally. The exploration of NFC and the reasonable restaurants of  Batla house during lunch time was definitely the thing I never had in mind when I heard about internship. I learned a lot of the practical aspects of engineering during the trainings. I would definitely like to praise Amity for having two mandatory internships. The submission of projects and much hyped viva was always enjoyable. Our group was never a law abiding one and although I am not going to mention them here, we have played with some dangerous rules at Amity. It was dangerous but fun too. So on the concluding note I would like to thank the university as it helped me become a good engineer and for all the good time I had in it. I would also like to thank our communication skills faculty Mr. Parveen Kumar for motivating me almost at gunpoint for writing this.

Life in four years...

“Engineering” considered being a field of brain, technical knowledge and day and night study. With hundreds of engineering colleges budding in every nook and corner of the states, it has merely become a misnomer now. Moreover the level of education is not at all qualitative; it is just certifying one as an engineer with the caliber not more than a senior secondary pass. It is the field that every math’s student views as his/her career option. And with me being no exception even I opted for the same.

So, I finally  came to an engineering college, a partial dream come true after 2 years of slogging. What had brought me here, were the high salaries students these days were getting, after getting into IIT’s ,but like most of the exam takers , I ended up in AMITY UNIVERSITY . Ya so salaries were a bigger factor, than a urge to become an engineer or i must say  the dream of living a high standard life was the only driving force.

What I immediately noticed after coming to college was that students were here from different parts of the country having constantly very good ranks in their respective schools. What we had learnt in higher secondary level was basically done to secure good marks . We hardly knew our attitude would remain with us throughout. Engineering really means playing with or dismantling different types of things around for the ease of humans, but very few among hundreds had that knack.  But whatever happened we have ended up in an engineering college for “four” unforgettable years of our life .

Students were now getting computers and laptops , we had internet connection in each room to stay updated about the latest technologies but  we were using them  to stay  connected to  friends through various social networking sites. Before we knew our exams were knocking the door, we always had this urge to laugh at people who used to study regularly and call them book worms but just before the exam we realize we were wrong, and the most important thing  is that this realization remained only till the exam time. Thus most of the students who were ex-toppers were seen slogging before exam and praying just to clear exams.

We enjoy all other time in our college except the weeks in which exams are held and we seriously do. Staying away from guardians does provide a lot of freedom.  Hanging out with friends in the campus, sleeping in class, giving proxies, mass bunks, taking computer games seriously , infact very seriously , watching movies throughout the day , waking up at noon, we even started watching soap operas, life here is completely different .

Till then it has been four long years now. We are still struggling with life everyday but habituated now and have become more tough and strong with the circumstances. The entire semester completes with the same struggle and the actual study is a day before the finals. Thus from my point of view, a B.Tech Degree is not a matter of 48 months(4 years) but a matter 65 nights(65 subjects in total degree , hence 65 nights before each exam.) A lesson it has taught is that life is not that easy always. Time is one of the best teachers. And of course ‘engineers’ rock’..!!!

Four years

When we were in school, we are soft, weak and innocent and I can feel the transformation in myself during these final moths of my college l months of my college days. The day I entered these huge gates it felt the same as Harry potter felt when he entered the gates of the great Hogwarts School. When I came here my sole purpose was to complete my degree and leave without being associated with people around me. Eventually, as time passed I started adapting to my surrounding, both good and bad. But, contrary to my purpose this voyage made me meet many people. All of those were like medicines which came with an expiry date. In the initial days I was very hesitant .For me the definition of friendship was unconditional companion through thick and thin, but my definition seemed to be a little inconsistent with that of my peers. For them friendship was companionship but only through sunny days but not through the cold winter days of their “FRIEND’S” life. I saw and treated every person I met with my definition of friendship. As time passed and we reached our second semester, when I saw my batch mates a certain feeling got induced in me which made me to believe that for an existence at amity all that was needed was a group to be associated with. But this ideology was never apt for my then puzzled life, this was the time when I carried my own emotional baggage and was trying to sort out my life. I persistently circled around the physiology block like a bear in search of honey. But this entire venture went in vain for me , my thirst of finding answers was not , all the efforts were fruitless for me .
After this Eventually I developed certain feelings for a girl and also the distance between me my family increased with time and both the situations were a source of constant brain storming for me .After the second semester when went back, my father met with a very unfortunate and fatal accident and to get things under my control and reduce the effect of the damage cost to me and my family, I pushed myself to a limit which I had never dreamed or imagined to reach. But when I came back to amity, I returned damaged .When I came back I just had one hope in my heart that I would again be with my friends and their companionship would help me mitigate the damage that I had suffered .But contrary to my expectation and hopes I did not receive the response I was desirous of, every one backed out.
After that, I tried to immerse myself in other but all I could surround by was the ghosts of my past and the only scene that revolved before my eyes was of the hospital where I saw all the blood & needles.
As the end of forth semester came near I isolated myself from my batch and started living with M.Sc. students. Slowly  and steadily after all the scars of my past I started to reboot myself .Then I happened to meet a person who had similar interest as mine he also could not sleep through nights so we started roaming around sector 126 and Amity all through the night .
During my fifth and sixth semester I happen to meet a person who was opposite to me in every possible sense, but with that person the ability to make decisions became very easy and I was able to see feasibility in my decisions.
After meeting this person I realized that what all that had happened to me had happened for a reason. We were opposites, I was fire and she was water.

After that things changed, I have people who cared for me more than I care for myself. I looked for new opportunities and worked for them with everything, I put in all my energy and resources to achieve what I always wanted. I got sponsorships for Amity Youth Fest, became a co-founder in a manpower company and found the answers I was looking for. Though tough times were there with me through all this time as well, like before, but through my will I learnt to overcome it. Now I have people in whom I can bestow my trust and for whom I wish to sacrifice and give it all.
So, this journey at Amity was full of ups as high as Everest and lows as low as Marina trench, but overall it was a great learning experience. I thank everyone who was a part of it.

Future Prospects of Civil+MBA

Many people do not get the concept behind the degree B.Tech-Civil+MBA. They do not understand what is the use of doing MBA if one is pursing Civil. They think doing M.tech is a better option rather than taking MBA degree. There is a lot of debate on this topic. Even my friends don’t agree with the idea of pursuing dual degree (Civil+MBA).
B.tech +M.tech is without a doubt a very good qualification to have but it does not mean B.tech+MBA is a bad degree. Both have its pros and cons. What one choose completely depends on what he/she is planning for  future, thus degrees suits an  individual.
What many people in India don’t see is the benefits that this degree gives. It saves one year which is a big deal and by pursuing this degree one can diversify  his approach and can do job in various different fields. Person can take up a job in a core civil engineering company as a site engineer or also go in for assistant manager job.  He can also opt for a not civil company and work in a management department.  MBA degree gives an edge over other people during promotions thus in a long  run it helps a lot. Also just by studying one more year we get a package worth more than double of what we would have got by doing just civil!
It is a perfect degree for the students who want to setup their own business especially related to real estate. Civil gives the knowledge about the construction work and MBA teaches how to run a business.
Thus this is qualification is a good one to have and will pretty much ensure a bright future.

Future Prospects of pursuing Dual Degree (B.Tech-Civil engineering+MBA)

In today's competitive world a single qualification is way below par.One must have multiple qualifications in order to become eligible for sitting in interview of a good company with a good job profile. So here i am ,pursuing a dual degree in B.Tech and MBA together from Amity University,Noida.

This degree has been a subject of controversial debate since last few years and even my peers don't appreciate this concept very well. However this concept has taken over academics in the Western World and is expected to influence the Indian education system in the coming few years. The concept of Dual degrees and Integrated courses are common in India but within the similar domain ie B.Tech+M.Tech and B.Sc+ M.Sc. However these courses limit a individual to a specific profession.

By pursuing a dual degree with dual specialisation such as B.Tech+MBA etc. one is able to diversify his qualification and achievements. This degree saves time, money and is highly in demand nowadays. After doing B.Tech and MBA one has 2 options. One can either work in a construction company and one can also change his/her trade if they wish to ,as MBA is applicable in all fields.

MBA degree might sound useless without work experience, however in the long run it will help in promotions and eligibility. This degree is considered equivalent to two separate degrees. One can enter Project Management, Quality control, Marketing, Productions and Operations Management and even HR in the field of Construction. If one does not have a interest in working in a industry then he or she can also apply for a work position in a educational institute. However he cannot do so with a B.Tech as a minimum requirement of M.Tech is required.

After attaining knowledge in these two domains one can also set up his/her own business.Hence this qualification is pretty decent in the long run and will most likely ensure a good future. However with the dynamic environment one has to be flexible in his learnings and experiences in order to gain a competitive advantage against others.

COLLEGE DAYS: GOLDEN ERA OF MY LIFE

First of all i want to thank Mr. Praveen Kumar Sir for giving me the opportunity to write few words on our 4years in Amity University, Noida. So,I choosed to do my technical degree in field of automobile engineering and that too in a combined dual degree coursei.e MBA,of which very few were aware in general at that time, but to save a year I opted for that.
During the time of admission ,the thing which is normal to came in every fresher’s mind is that now this is going to be the world in which I can live the way I want to,my college life was about to start. Now after looking to the college life and future prospects i realzed that i should opt that subject in which i could get the family support and my intrest lies ,so i opted for civil engineering + mba .Fortunately as i am a 8 pointer i was allowed to change the batch after a lot of hardship of 2 months.
Some college students believe that college is only about finding a job. I admit that too , I was one of those students. But my college experience till now has helped me realize that college is about finding yourself; who you are as a person and the type of person you want to be. In these 4 years i got to know about my skills . As he semesters passed, less classes were held and we use to get a lot of free time. We used to play cricket and online games & gym in free time . All the semesters upto now have been very progressive and every semester created a minor change not even in academics but also in thought processes. The fun with with friends, the H block, hanging out , bunking our classes all have become a significant part of my memory.
So now when I look back and think about my life in Amity, I think I took the right decision about coming here. Not because of its infrastructure or what it offers to students but because of those few special people whom I met and who have made me what I am today. Well, i am still left with a year of masters, part of the dual degree, but times will not be same as before.
Those days unfortunately will never come back and Really it is rightly said that life of amity in a nutshell or 3A’s of amity ..
